Children’s Mental Health Week 2026</”h5″>

Children’s Mental Health Week takes place from 9th to 15th February 2026. This year’s theme, “This Is My Place”, focuses on how communities can create an environment that gives children and young people a sense of belonging.

Has your child found their happy place?

At Cindy’s Swim School, we see every day how important it is for children to have a place where they feel safe, confident and accepted. For many of our swimmers, the pool becomes exactly that — their happy place. A familiar environment where they have fun, are known by name, encouraged at their own pace, and supported by friends and teachers who care.

Swimming isn’t just about learning a life skill or improving fitness. It offers children a sense of routine, connection and calm, all of which play a vital role in supporting good mental health.

At Cindy’s Swim School, we love all things swimming, and we want our swimmers to feel their absolute best in and out of the water. To mark Children’s Mental Health Week, we’re sharing five powerful ways swimming can positively support children’s emotional wellbeing, confidence and sense of belonging, both in and out of the water.

Five Ways Swimming Boosts Children's Mental Health

Here's what we'll cover - click to jump to a section:

Provides a safe, familiar and fun place

Offers a friendly swimming school community

Develops independence and self-esteem

Boosts endorphins and serotonin

Helps kids reach achievable goals

1. The Pool Gives Children a Safe, Familiar and Fun Place

For some children, school can feel overwhelming. Team sports may feel too competitive. Home can be busy and noisy. That’s why having one place where they feel comfortable being themselves is so important.

For many of our swimmers, the pool becomes that place.

The Pool is a place to unwind and relax!

The swimming pool is familiar and predictable, it's free from distraction and a place to focus, it's also the same space each week, friendly teachers, familiar faces and clear routines. This consistency helps children feel safe and secure, which is especially important for emotional regulation and confidence. When children know what to expect, they’re more able to relax, try new things and enjoy the moment.

In the water, children can focus on themselves rather than outside pressures. They move, breathe, learn and play in a supportive environment where progress is celebrated at every stage. Whether they’re learning to float, perfecting a stroke or simply enjoying being in the water with friends, the pool becomes a place where they feel capable and best of all have fun!

Having “my place”, somewhere children feel they belong can make a real difference to their mental wellbeing. For many families, swimming lessons at Cindy’s Swim School become more than a weekly activity; they become part of a routine that supports confidence, friendships and happiness.
2. Kids Become Part of a Swimming School Community

Swimming is more than just a sport. It's a great way to join a community, meet new friends, and build meaningful relationships. At Cindy’s Swim School, we care deeply about our community. We celebrate our swimmers' progress throughout the year, from cheering small wins during lessons to quarterly celebrations. Our annual gala is a highlight, an opportunity to get together and support each other, encourage friends and family, and get involved in the swimming community.

Where does your child go to that always leaves them with a smile on their face?

Swimming can offer a break from academic pressures, and give children an outlet for stress. We know just how important our swimming community has been to each and every one of us. We’ve seen it firsthand: kids arriving at lessons feeling grumpy from their day, but leaving with smiles on their faces after spending time with friends doing something they love.

3. Builds Independence and self-esteem

Learning how to swim boosts mental health in adults and children alike. It raises self-esteem, gives a sense of purpose, and connects us with a whole new community of people. Children's brains are wired to learn new things and mastering a skill like swimming gives a sense of accomplishment and stimulates their minds.

Swimming is a valuable life skill, building independence and autonomy in children. Water safety awareness and learning how to keep each other and ourselves safe is incredibly important. We want parents to have confidence in their children's abilities and peace of mind when they're near water. The water is much more fun when everyone is safe.

Swimming is something to be proud of!

Swimming is a sport for everyone! At Cindy's Swim School we welcome kids of all ages and all abilities. We want everyone to love swimming as much as we do and tailor our lessons to each child's needs. Watching children grow from being nervous beginners in the water to confident swimmers who have mastered breaststroke, diving, and enjoy racing their friends is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

4. Boosts Endorphins and Serotonin

Swimming, just like any sport, can supercharge your endorphins and increase your serotonin. What you may not know is swimming is also good for injury prevention, improving flexibility and mobility. This means that you can spend more time doing your favourite sports, and less time recovering from injuries!

Swimming makes you feel good!

Rhythmic activities such as swimming can help with mindfulness and be a form of meditation. It’s low impact and improves your blood flow and breath control. Furthermore, swimming can be used in conjunction with other sports such as football or netball to keep kids strong and healthy, improve stamina, and boost recovery!
5. Helps Kids Reach Achievable Goals

Feeling a sense of accomplishment is great for our mental health. At Cindy's we recognise and celebrate the achievements of all of our swimmers at the end of every term. Our clear framework of lessons gives swimmers measurable goals, no matter where they are in their swimming journey. It’s important to us that everyone learns a lot while enjoying swimming just as much as we do. We pride ourselves in supporting them through every step of their journey.

Our annual gala gives everyone a chance to compete against each other and against themselves from the previous year. It's the perfect opportunity to chart progress and set goals. Our teachers train for our gala throughout the year too. Kids love to watch their teachers race (although they might be slightly too competitive!).

At Cindy's, the gala is one of our favourite days. We love watching our kids achieve their swimming goals, cheer each other on to win medals and show their new skills to their family.

Swimming can be your child's sport for life...

Swimming lessons at Cindy’s Swim School are about so much more than learning to swim. The joy that comes from swimming is hard to explain and I’m passionate about teaching adults how to swim so they can experience this too.

Frequently Asked Questions about Adult Swimming

Click the question to jump to our answer!

Why learn to swim as an adult?

Is it too late to learn how to swim as an adult?

Can you teach yourself to swim as an adult?

What if I'm overweight? It's good for you physically, mentally, and emotionally. And it isn't just me who thinks that swimming is great! There is an abundance of research that proves the multiple and vast benefits of regular swimming.

For example, research from the Value of Swimming report commissioned by Swim England reported that:

1.4 million adults say that swimming has significantly improved their depression and anxiety symptoms. In addition, swimming helped prevent 78,500 cases of ill health in a single year including dementia, diabetes and strokes.

If you're convinced by the data but still have questions, read on for everything you need to know.

Is it too late to learn how to swim as an adult?

Never! The oldest person I have taught to swim was a lovely lady who was 87 years old. Throughout her life she had never been taught how to swim. Her husband, a keen swimmer, loved all things water and ensured their children learned how to swim too. This left Mum sitting on the beach or by the poolside, watching them have fun for many years. On her 87th birthday she decided that she was going to learn how to swim before she died and so our journey began.

It was an amazing time because I taught her how to swim a confident, solid front crawl (freestyle) and backstroke in just two weeks! This lady was a natural swimmer!

How this made her feel, you can imagine. She was so proud to be swimming at last, but also regretful that she had waited so long. I'm sure her advice would now to be grab the chance and learn while you can!

Not every swimmer's journey will be as smooth or easy or fast. But, it doesn't make it any less worthy! Rest assured, swimming is not as difficult as you may think.

All the different strokes; front crawl (freestyle), backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly, are built on a solid, but basic foundation of a few skills that, once mastered, makes learning much easier. At Cindy's we aim to give our swimmers the best swimming experience possible. We have created an easy to follow teaching programme, taught by passionate, caring teachers whose goal is to help their students become happy and confident swimmers. Our teachers are trained and qualified to teach all body types and abilities.

Can you teach yourself to swim as an adult?

There’s no shortage of videos, apps and articles online, and these can be useful for getting a basic understanding of swimming or feeling more prepared before you start.

That said, learning to swim on your own can be hard, especially if you’re nervous or unsure in the water. Online resources can’t see what you’re doing, keep you safe, or step in if you feel anxious or overwhelmed.

A good swimming teacher offers calm reassurance, real-time feedback and support that’s tailored to you. They help you build confidence, avoid bad habits, and progress at a pace that feels comfortable, which is why most adults find lessons the quickest and most enjoyable way to learn.

What If I'm Overweight? Can you be too big to learn how to swim?

Don't worry about being too big, water is wonderfully buoyant. Water supports bodies of all shapes and sizes. In fact, many larger adults find floating easier than they expect.

The largest person I ever taught was 6 foot 4 and weighed 120 kg and was absolutely terrified of water! He had never walked into a swimming pool before and felt unstable on his feet. He instinctively grabbed me and threw himself around me like a teddy bear. Thanks to the buoyancy of water, I managed to hold him and show him that he was perfectly safe. From that first lesson, we built a strong, solid foundation of understanding how water works and how his body fitted in that space. Within a few months he could happily swim a few basic strokes.
How easy or difficult will learning how to swim be?

This is a hard question to answer; learning is individual and where you come from, your understanding of water and if you have had anything like a near drowning experience, will affect how you learn to swim.

What I can say is, swimming itself isn't overly complicated. The basic foundations of swimming are essential to being able to swim properly and to being able to enjoy it. Once you have learnt those as a swimmer, the rest is much easier.

If you have had negative experiences around water, then please do share that with your teacher. You will be helping them to support you, so that you can feel more safe and confident.

Aside from how difficult or easy learning to swim may be for you, you should be prepared to invest in several weeks of lessons at least. Some people take weeks to learn to swim, other people take months before they reach the competency they want to achieve.

how long does it take to learn how to swim for adults?

How long it takes to learn to swim as an adult varies from person to person. It depends on factors such as your confidence in the water, any previous experiences (positive or negative), how often you attend lessons, and what your personal goals are.

In general, most adults should be prepared to commit to at least several weeks of lessons. Some people feel comfortable floating, breathing and swimming short distances within a few weeks, while others take a few months to build the level of confidence and technique they’re aiming for. Both are completely normal.

Learning to swim isn’t a race. Progress often comes in small but meaningful steps, feeling calmer in the water, learning to breathe comfortably, or trusting your body to float. With regular practice, patience and supportive instruction, those steps gradually come together to form confident, relaxed swimming.

What equipment do I need and what should I wear?

What you need for swimming lessons may vary depending on the swim school you go to, but these are what we think are essential:

A swimming costume: Make sure that the swimming costume is comfortable and stretchy, especially for mens' shorts. Men's swimming trunks should allow free movement and the ability to climb in and out of swimming pools without restriction. If swimwear is too loose it can drag and make the swimmer feel heavy. Loose swimwear may also get in the way of being able to swim properly.

A good swimming cap and goggles: If you want to swim properly, the reality is that your face will need to be in the water for a period of time. Goggles which are comfortable to allow you to see where you are going are essential. A swimming cap keeps the goggles in place, keeps your hair dry, and helps with streamlining. We sell ones we recommend because we know they work, but we are also happy to recommend others

For our adult swimmers, we recommend Zoggs Predator goggles. These have a supple, fleshy frame and large lenses. We offer a regular profile fit and clear lenses.

Kickboard and flippers (fins). These provide stability and support for beginners, help improve stroke techniques through various exercises, promote proper body position, and offer extra buoyancy and speed. Your swimming teacher will advise if and when you need to invest in a kickboard and flipper kit.

\r
Kickboards are an important swimming aid. They initially teach proper body position and give aid for weaker swimmers, for more advanced swimmers they are a vital tool in stroke correction. This kickboard is designed from an adult frame.
Flippers are an important swimming aid for swimmers who are wanting to strengthen and improve their strokes. They allow the swimmer to isolate and work on legs, without compromising body position in the water.

Noodle (Woggle): For extra nervous swimmers, a foam noodle offers additional buoyancy and support. It is particularly helpful for practicing independently, providing the support a teacher would typically give when holding their student. With our lessons, your teacher will have their own noodle at first, and will advise if you need your own.

\rNoodles are an important swimming aid for beginner swimmers mainly, although they are also fantastic to use when learning breaststroke kick. They give the swimmer confidence and buoyancy, allowing them to focus on learning how to kick, float and swim properly.
What to Expect at your First Swimming Lesson?

At the start of your first swimming lesson, I recommend a quick chat with your swimming teacher. Fill them in on your swimming background and any experiences, such as near-drowning incidents. This is also a good opportunity to communicate your goals for the lessons, helping your teacher guide you over the sessions to achieve them.

Your teacher in turn will inform you on what to expect from your first swimming lesson and going forward.

Once you are in the pool, your teacher will teach you the most important rule of swimming: breathing. Proper breathing is essential to being able to swim properly and enjoying the process. Your teacher will also introduce the basics of kicking and floating on your front and on your back.

Our teachers are in the pool and they hold swimmers to give as much support as needed, especially whilst swimmers are finding their swimming tails and building confidence in those first few lessons.\r
What if I panic during a lesson?

Panic is more common than people realise, and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Our teachers are trained to recognise signs of anxiety and will always prioritise your safety and comfort. You’re never forced to do anything you’re not ready for, and progress is always made step by step.

The Next Step...

Learning to swim as an adult can seem daunting , but please don't let nerves or fear stop you. Finally, we'll share some top tips to keep motivated and achieve your swimming goals.

How to Learn to swim in 2026

Let Go of The Fears and Doubts

Discover the Life-Changing Benefits of Learning to Swim

Stay Committed to Your New Swimming Journey

Let Go of the Fears and Doubts

Most adults who join us have held onto certain thoughts for years and those thoughts kept them out of the water. There are many reasons that people put off learning how to swim, far too many to list. However, here's a few common worries that people have. Maybe you’ll recognise some of them:

“I can’t swim at all.”

You don't have to swim at all to start swimming lessons at Cindy's. Not a single stroke. Not even how to float. You don't even need to have stepped into a pool before. We absolutely teach people to swim from scratch. And you'll also be surprised by how quickly you'll learn.

“I feel embarrassed.”

Have you been embarrassed to approach the pool? Does it put you off when you think about going into the changing rooms? You may be terrified of stepping into a new swimming pool, but this is so common. So many adults worry they’ll stand out or that everyone else will know what they’re doing. But at Cindy’s, we promise we will look after you. We have friendly teachers and pool co-ordinators who will greet you and help you. We'll know that you're new and we will show you where to go and what to do. Our co-ordinators' job is to make you feel comfortable and secure, help you find your teacher and get you started.

“I’m scared.”

Fear of deep water. Fear of drowning. Fear of being judged. Fear of not being able to breathe. Fear of putting your head or face in the water. Fear from a difficult past experience. These are all real emotions and we take them very seriously. Our teachers support you at your pace, creating a calm, reassuring atmosphere where fear fades as confidence grows.

“I’m too old.”

Nope — never. We teach adults in their 20s, 40s, 60s, and well beyond. The oldest pupil Cindy has taught to swim was 87 years old. Age has nothing to do with it. Bravery, curiosity and willingness to try something new matter far more.

Whatever thoughts have held you back, 2026 can be the year you set them down.

Discover the Life-Changing Benefits of Learning to Swim

Learning to swim is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. It isn’t just about technique, it’s about unlocking confidence, safety and finding joy in the pool. Here’s some of the many the benefits our swimmers tell us about:

The ability to swim with your children or grandchildren

Whether you want to keep them safe in the water, hold your baby in the pool or simply enjoy splashing around with the kids, swimming opens up wonderful family moments. For many people, this is the turning point that motivates them to start. Swimming well is also a vital safety skill, that could one day save a child’s life (and, heaven forbid, stop you both getting in trouble in the water).

Enjoying holidays so much more

Swimming will transform your holidays! Imagine looking forward to the hotel pool rather than avoiding it. Picture swimming lengths on holiday, floating in the sea without fear, or joining in with family fun instead of sitting by the edge. You can join in with so many more activities; the water park, water sports, jumping waves and even going on a boat trip with less fear. A whole new world of relaxation and fun opens up when you’re comfortable in the water.

Physical benefits that improve health and make you feel good.

Swimming is an incredible form of exercise. What's not to like about a low-impact, full-body workout that boosts fitness, strength, mobility and cardiovascular health, without putting pressure on your joints? Plus, it strengthens every major muscle group and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Mental wellbeing and stress relief

Once you have mastered breathing when you swim (probably the number one thing adults want to achieve from their swimming lessons), you will find that swimming is a great stress-buster! Even when you're not quite swimming yet, the focus on breathing, the feel of the water and the rhythmic movement can take you out of yourself, and send away those daily worries. Exercise releases “feel-good” endorphins that boost mood and ease anxiety, and swimming definitely helps you sleep better at night, which is just so good for you!

A huge confidence boost

Learning to swim pushes you (kindly!) outside your comfort zone and the sense of achievement when you succeed is unmatched.

Every fear you face and overcome builds resilience and confidence that spills over into other areas of your life. Many swimmers tell us they feel braver, stronger, and more capable in everyday situations after learning to swim.

Finding new friends and a community

At Cindy’s, you’ll meet other adults who started exactly where you are now. You’ll be encouraged and inspired by people who understand your fears and cheer your progress.

Swimming can also open the door to new hobbies such as kayaking, paddleboarding, open-water swimming and even triathlons. These hobbies can lead to more friends and communities to join.

And yes... it could save your life...or someone else’s

Swimming is a vital life skill. Knowing how to float, tread water, or calmly handle unexpected situations in water could one day make an enormous difference.

Stay Committed to Your Swimming Journey

Setting the resolution is easy, keeping it going is the part that matters. These simple strategies can help you stay motivated:

Start with the smallest step: book the lesson!

The hardest part is walking through the door. Once you do that, you’ve already succeeded.

Be patient with yourself.

Everyone learns at their own pace. Progress isn’t always a straight line. Some lessons will feel amazing; others might feel harder. Like any other challenges in life, there may be times you feel like giving up. We're here to reassure you all of this is normal. If you’re nervous, that’s okay. You don’t need to push yourself too fast. Small, gradual steps build lasting confidence. Be kind to yourself and realise it may take time to reach your goals but you will get there!

Go to lessons regularly.

Commit to make every lesson. Consistency boosts confidence and helps fear melt away much faster. You’re less likely to stop once you have some momentum. Regular practice will help build muscle memory and boost your confidence.

Celebrate every win!

Booking the lesson, turning up, getting in the pool, floating for the first time, blowing bubbles, mastering your breathing, swimming your first few strokes; they’re all huge milestones worth celebrating. Every tiny step counts. Make sure you notice it and count it as a victory. No matter how small, it's progress. Noticing the small wins will keep you motivated and succeed.

Ask for encouragement.

Tell your family and friends what you’re doing. You’ll be surprised how motivating a little encouragement can be.

And remember: at Cindy’s, your teachers and fellow swimmers will also be your cheerleaders. We have a great community of learners and many newbies are at first pleasantly surprised to find how friendly our people in London are! We all love celebrating your wins and we’re keen to let you know how well you're doing.

Make 2026 the Year You Finally Learn to Swim

You don’t need experience.
You don’t need confidence.
You don’t need to “be ready.”

You just need the willingness to take that first simple step and we’ll guide you through the rest.

If you’re ready to feel proud, strong, confident and safe in the water, we’d love to help you start your swimming journey.

Let 2026 be the year you finally learn to swim!

Get in touch and our friendly team will be happy to help answer any questions or concerns you may have. A good pair helps little ones feel safe putting their face in the water, and encourages them to open their eyes under water and explore. When shopping, choose soft-seal goggles with adjustable straps so they fit snugly yet comfortably. We have an article about how to choose the best pair of goggles for your child to help you pick the right pair.

Ripper Junior Goggles

For ages 6 to 14, Zoggs Junior Ripper goggles have soft fleshy frames for young faces, anti-fog lenses and adjustable split straps to help keep those goggles on for the whole session!

Predator Junior Goggles

We love Zoggs Predator Junior Goggles! We like the supple frame and large lenses that fit comfortably on smaller faces, and that’s so important to prevent leaks and stop goggles from becoming a distraction in swimming lessons.

A stretchy silicone swim cap

Swim caps help keep hair out of the way, cut down drag and protect children's hair from pool chemicals. We recommend silicone caps because they’re soft, stretchy, and easier for kids to put on themselves without any tears or fuss.

Watch Cindy show you how easy it is to put on a silicone swim cap

If you sign up to swimming lessons at Cindy's you get one of our caps free! Otherwise, they cost just £5 (plus postage and packing). They're just the right size for a small gift a practical stocking filler gift.

Swim Noodle

Swimming noodles (aka woggles) are ideal for swimmers who are just starting out.

They provide buoyancy and help little ones feel secure while they learn to float, kick and move in the water.

Noodles are also fun, and can be used for games or as a confidence booster.

Pull buoys (for more advanced swimmers)

If you’re shopping for a child who already swims confidently and wants to improve technique, a pull buoy is a brilliant training tool. It’s held between the legs and helps keep the body horizontal, enabling the swimmer to focus on arm strokes. It’s a favourite for technique development and makes a great “grown-up swimmer” gift.

Kickboards – great for building strength and confidence

A kickboard is another fantastic swimming aid for children who are building stamina and improving their kick technique. By supporting the upper body, a kickboard allows swimmers to focus on strong, steady leg kicks and proper body position.

They give aid for weaker swimmers, and for more advanced swimmers they are a vital tool in stroke correction.

They’re especially useful for early breaststroke and front-crawl practice, and many kids love using them because they feel independent while still having support.

Junior Kickboard

The Junior kickboard is designed to suit the smaller frame and is suitable for age 3 upwards.
Adult Kickboard

This kickboard is designed from an adult frame.
Flippers

Flippers (or swim fins) are a brilliant gift for confident beginners and developing swimmers. They help children move faster through the water, which instantly boosts confidence and makes swimming feel exciting and fun.

Flippers also encourage swimmers to use a long, powerful leg kick, helping strengthen their legs and improve body position.

They’re great for practising front crawl and backstroke, and many children love using them during fun swims as well as in lessons. If you’re buying for a child who’s eager to progress, a pair of flippers is a guaranteed hit.

We hope this guide has given you plenty of inspiration for meaningful and confidence-boosting swimming gifts. During our baby swimming lessons we find it’s a fantastic way to build baby’s water confidence, teach important early swimming skills and, most importantly, have fun!

Why play swimming games with your baby?

When babies enjoy games in the pool, they quickly learn to associate swimming with play, laughter and positive experiences. Songs, splashes and simple exercises can make the water feel like a safe and exciting place, while also laying the foundations for future swimming techniques.

Don't be a bored parent in the pool! Games make swimming fun for you too!

In this article, we share five favourite baby swimming games. Why not try them in the pool with your baby too? It’s a great way to enjoy swimming together. You’ll both have lots of fun and boost your baby’s confidence in the pool at the same time.

5 Favourite Baby Swimming Games

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Catching toys on a noodle

Humpty Dumpty

Whooshing on a noodle

The Wheels on the Bus

1. Row, Row, Row Your Boat

This classic nursery rhyme becomes even more exciting in the water.

Sit your baby at the pool’s edge or on a large float (like in the video). Sing along while gently rocking them. At the end of the song, babies can “fall” forward into the water with your support.

You can start by blowing bubbles on the surface to keep it playful, and as they grow in confidence, you can transition towards a gentle sitting dive.

👉 Why it helps: It introduces babies to the idea of going under the water in a safe and fun way.

2. Catching Toys on a Noodle

Give your baby a woggle (also called a pool noodle) to hold with both hands, palms facing upward underneath the noodle.

Place some floating toys around the pool and encourage them to kick towards the toys.

Once they reach one, they should grab it with just one hand and place it on the poolside, all while holding onto the noodle with the other hand.

👉 Why it helps: This develops reaching, hand-eye coordination, balance, and the important skill of holding onto a float while moving in the water. Babies and toddlers love grabbing the toys (and quite often chewing them as well!)

3. Humpty Dumpty

Sing the Humpty Dumpty rhyme while your baby sits on the poolside wall. At the end of the song, they “fall” into the water, this time practising a flat submersion.

Over time, this helps them learn how to push forward into the water with their arms in a streamline position. Teaching this correctly right from the start has a big impact on learning this swimming stroke.

As children get older this "fall" smoothly turns into a sitting dive.

👉 Why it helps: this play encourages correct body position for early swimming strokes and boosts water confidence. It also gives a wonderful achievement and the opportunity for lots of praise!

4. Whooshing on a Noodle

This one is always a hit! Sit your baby on a noodle and gently whoosh them around the pool. For little ones, it’s a calming way to get used to the noodle, and for older babies, it becomes a hilarious, giggly game as they whizz around.

👉 Why it helps: It helps reluctant babies grow comfortable with a noodle and builds positive associations with swimming.

5. The Wheels on the Bus

Turn this versatile and much loved nursery rhyme into a water adventure. As you sing, you can change some of the lyrics and add simple water play actions.

The wheels on the bus go round and round... and this is the way we:

Kick our legs - kick legs in the water

Splash, splash, splash - splash in the water

Zoom, zoom, zoom - zoom forward on board or float in the water

Wash our face – gently splash water over your baby’s face.

👉 Why it helps: Combines singing, play, and gentle water exercises that make babies feel relaxed and confident. This also helps littles ones learn to listen and follow instructions, which is a fun introduction to important swimming exercises (not to mention later adventures in nursery and school!)
The developmental benefits of baby swimming games

These simple baby swimming pool games aren’t just fun, they play an important role in your baby’s developmental journey, as they help improve all sorts of associated skills, like language and physical development. Singing familiar songs and rhymes, playing with toys, learning to reach, balance, kick and splash, and how it feels to go under the water, all help your baby develop physically, improving co-ordination and motor skills, as well as language and counting skills. All this is going on! Isn't it amazing!

Add these games to your next swimming session, and you’ll both look forward to every splash together!

Feel out of your depth? Join one of our baby swimming sessions

It's often easier to play lots of games with your baby and have plenty of fun together when you're led by an instructor. We have a wealth of other games and exercises for parents and babies to enjoy together, and don't forget grandparents, aunties and uncles or other carers are welcome too! Many parents face the same dilemma: should you start after school lessons, take a break from swimming lessons while they settle into reception, or wait until they’re a little older?

Perhaps your child is older and you’re questioning if now is the right year to begin swimming after school. Or maybe they already have after school swimming lessons but they seem tired after school, and you’re questioning whether it’s too much.

Whatever stage your child is at, this guide will answer the most common parent questions about after school swimming lessons and help you decide what’s best for your family.
Let's look at:

Should children continue swimming lessons when they start reception?

How to cope with tiredness after the school day

How to choose the right after school swimming lessons for your child

Seek structured lessons that are aligned with your child's development.

Should I withdraw my child from swimming lessons if they're struggling to cope?

What are some of the benefits of after school swimming lessons?

Don't end up on the dreaded waiting list

If you aren't happy, do say so

Should Children Continue Swimming Lessons When They Start Reception?

In a word, yes, especially if your child has already been enjoying preschool swimming lessons.

It’s easy to understand why some parents withdraw their 4 year olds from swimming lessons when they start reception. It’s natural for parents to ask: Will it be too much? Will they cope after a full day at school? Should we wait until later?

But taking a break can set your child back. Water confidence can take a knock and without regular practice, skills and techniques are easily forgotten.

As parents, we all know the saying: “If you don’t use it, you lose it” and when children are suddenly busy learning so many new things each day, swimming skills can slip away faster than you think.

After putting in all the effort, time (and money!) into building a solid swimming foundation for your little ones, it would be such a waste if they lost it all and had to start over again. Continuing lessons, even once a week, helps them stay confident, strong, and ready to keep moving forward on their swimming journey.

At Cindy’s, we know how important swimming is to your child’s confidence, fitness and enjoyment and we want their time with us to be the very best it can be. Our young swimmers have an amazing time in their lessons and most importantly build a solid foundation from which to dive into their full stroke swimming journeys.

Starting school is a big change as is reacclimatising to being back from the long summer holidays. Some children need a little extra support as they adjust to new routines.

Read on for answers to common parent questions, plus practical tips to help your child settle into after school swimming lessons

How to cope with tiredness after the school day - Top Tips

It’s true that reception children can be exhausted in the early weeks of school, which is why many parents wonder whether to participate in any after school activities. But if you do just one, we’d always recommend swimming. Not only does it support their physical development, but it also boosts confidence and builds on the skills they’ve already worked so hard to achieve.

To help:

Keep non-swimming days as restful as possible.

Create a calm after school routine that leads to an earlier bedtime. Even an extra 30 minutes of sleep makes a huge difference.

Remember, swimming itself often helps anxious or restless children to relax and sleep more easily.

This is only a temporary phase. Before long, your child’s energy levels will settle, and swimming will feel like a natural part of their weekly routine again.
How to choose the right after school swimming lessons for your child

Look for teachers who are trained to support young learners (and their parents).

Our passionate and dedicated teachers are specifically trained on how best to understand the needs of new school goers and children who return back to school after the holidays.

Our lesson plans are specifically designed to build on their swimming foundations, whilst taking time to build back strength and fitness, as they settle into their after school routines.

Our teachers also know to take it easy for the first few weeks while your little ones may be tired. With our open door policy, we always encourage parents to regularly update their teachers on anything that might be helpful in having happy and confident swimmers.

Seek structured lessons that are aligned with your child’s development

Our teaching builds on familiar skills in small steps, helping children transition smoothly from toddler and preschooler groups to 4:1 lessons. Our layering structure keeps exercises familiar whilst progressing swimmers at a steady pace.

Their physical and mental development guide them through the teaching program so they only learn technical and physically challenging strokes when they are ready. This ensures they’re challenged only when they’re capable and never pushed beyond their limits.

Should I Withdraw My Child from Swimming Lessons if They’re Struggling to cope?

The short answer is no. Continuity is your friend! Pausing lessons can undo progress. Children may lose water confidence, strength and the familiarity of pool routines. By sticking with it, even at a slower pace, your child continues to make steady progress and avoids the setback of “starting over.”

It’s always worth having a chat with your child’s swimming teacher to let them know how they’re feeling. The lessons can then be kept light and fun, focusing on the progress they’ve already made, until your child feels ready to take on the next challenge.
What are Some of the Benefits of After School Swimming Lessons?

Swimming is more than just a skill. It’s exercise, fun, and an important outlet after a long day of sitting in the classroom. Even if your child seems tired after the school day, a swimming pool is a totally different environment for physical exertion that will quickly enliven and refresh them.

Regular lessons boost physical fitness and strength. Indeed exercise is sooooo good for all of us! It release feel-good endorphins which keep us happy, motivated and help us sleep. This is especially true in the winter months when the places and variety of sports we can do with our little ones in London drop substantially.

Don’t end up on the dreaded Waiting List

Every year we see young swimmers take a break from swimming, to help settle them into school. When this happens, those slots open up to new customers coming in.

As we have limited space, this leads to a lot of disappointment when customers try to return a few weeks into the new term. This is disappointing for us, as we always try to accommodate and hate to see eager swimmers not swimming, but we just don’t have the space.

If you aren’t happy, do say so

If you are not happy with your lessons, or have any concerns, please do let us know! We strive to deliver to you the best swimming lessons and experience here at Cindy’s, which we cannot do without customer feedback.

All complaints, concerns and queries are dealt with as an immediate priority and we can usually correct or improve things pretty quickly. We have a thorough training programme in place, which means that our teachers are always learning and perfecting their craft, all so that they can give you the best lessons in SW London!

And if you’re enjoying your after school swimming lessons with us, we’d love a shout-out on Google, Facebook, or Instagram! What better way to celebrate this passion than by taking part in National Marine Week?

National Marine Week is an annual event organised by the Wildlife Trust. It celebrates the wonderful seas around the UK and all things marine.

It aims to raise awareness about the importance of marine environments and promotes actions we can take part in to protect them.

In 2025, National Marine week takes place from 26th July to 10th August. This year's theme is showcasing our seabeds.

Here are five ways you can get involved and make a positive impact:

1. Take Part in the Source to Sea Litter Quest

You don’t have to live near the sea to help keep it clean. Wherever you are located in the UK, you can help our oceans by participating in the Source to Sea Litter Quest organised by the Marine Conservation Society.

The quest involves recording litter found in your local area. With 80% of beach litter originating inland, your efforts help track and fight litter pollution. The data collected helps track rubbish back to its source. The results are then used to find solutions to ocean pollution and to campaign for measures to bring positive change.

Download a recording form from the Marine Conservation Society, conduct a litter survey in your local park, street, or near a river and submit your findings.

2. Visit a Marine-Themed Exhibition

One of the most powerful ways to protect our oceans is by inspiring the next generation to care about them. The summer holidays are a great time to do just that and you don’t need to head to the coast to get involved.

The UK is home several fascinating museums and aquariums where children (and adults!) can learn about marine life, conservation, and the challenges our oceans face.

Sea Life Aquariums across the UK (including in London) offer an up-close look at UK marine species and feature exhibits focused on ocean conservation.

Horniman Museum in Forest Hill has a brilliant aquarium.

The Natural History Museum houses an incredible collection of ocean-related specimens, from fossils and seabed samples to preserved marine creatures. These collections help scientists study vital issues like climate change and marine pollution.

3. Try a plastic free month

Did you know that July is plastic free month? While we’re now into August, it’s never too late to take part. One of the best ways we can all help reduce water pollution in our seas and rivers is to minimise the use of plastic products.

Why not take the plastic free challenge and see if you can reduce or remove all plastics from your life for a month, helping reduce marine pollution in the process.

4. Help in a Beach or River Clean-Up

If you’re heading to the beautiful UK coastline this summer, why not participate in a beach clean-up? Check the Marine Conservation Society website to find organised beach clean-ups near your holiday destination.

Staying in London over the summer? Then check out the volunteer days on the Thames 21 website, particularly the Action for Silk Stream monthly clean-ups held on the last Thursday of each month. Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

You can also participate in the Million Mile Clean, which organizes clean-ups along beaches, streets, rivers, mountains, and parks.

5. Take Action Against Microplastics

Microplastics are a significant threat to marine ecosystems and human health. Microplastics, smaller than 5mm, come in two types: primary microplastics like nurdles, bio-beads, and microfibres, and secondary microplastics from broken-down larger plastics.

To help fight against microplastics you can take part in the Marine Conservation Society's Big Microplastic Survey. This involves participating in beach surveys to collect information on this pollution in the UK.

The data collected supports scientific research, which can be used as evidence to change pollution policies and legislation.

To get involved, register, download guides, and report findings through the Big Microplastic Survey app. Learn more here.

You can make a difference!

By participating in one of these five activities, you can make a meaningful contribution to marine conservation during National Marine Week and beyond!

<”h5″ class="entry-title">Boost Your Child’s Confidence: 3 Ways a Summer Crash Course Helps Nervous Swimmers 😀</”h5″>

At Cindy’s, one of the most common questions our swimming teachers hear is:

“My child is nervous in the water. How can I help build their confidence at swimming lessons?”

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone and the good news is there are ways to help.

It's normal to feel nervous learning to swim

First, it’s completely natural for children to feel unsure in the water. After all, swimming lessons involve:

a new environment that has inherent danger

unfamiliar sensations and your child may not feel in control

learning skills that can feel overwhelming and scary

new instructors or classmates, which can make it harder to settle in.

That’s why our swimming teachers are specially trained to support children who are feeling anxious or hesitant in the water. If you have any concerns, please do chat with us during your time at the pool. We’re here to help.

Frequent, regular time in the pool is the best way

One of the most effective things you can do to help your child overcome anxiety and build lasting confidence is regular, consistent time in the pool. But what happens during the long summer break when term-time lessons take a pause?

This is where summer crash courses come in.

Here are three ways a swimming crash course can help build your child’s confidence and skills over the summer.

Let's look at:

Daily Practice Over the Summer Holidays

Bridging the Gap Between Term-Time Lessons

Gaining Confidence for Summer Adventures

Now's the Time to Boost Your Child's Confidence

Daily Practice Over the Summer Holidays

Swimming every day during the holidays gives children a valuable opportunity to practise and reinforce their skills. One of the main reasons kids feel nervous in the pool is simply because it’s been a while since their last lesson. Even just a week can feel like a long time to a child.

When children swim daily, they relax more in the water. They also develop muscle memory much faster and are more likely to remember what they learned the day before. Skills become smoother and more natural, and kids are better able to identify and correct their own mistakes.

Daily lessons also reduce the cognitive load. As skills become automatic, kids can relax more and focus on progressing to the next level, without having to re-learn the basics each week.

And since these crash courses run during the school holidays, your child won’t be tired from a full day at school. With more energy to focus, they can often make bigger leaps in progress and enjoy swimming even more.

Bridging the Gap Between Term-Time Lessons

There's a phenomenen called the "summer slide" which describes the learning loss children can experience over the long summer break. Studies show that children can lose a lot of academic ground during the summer, meaning they spend the first few weeks of term trying to catch up.

The same applies to swimming. A six-week break from lessons can lead to a loss of confidence or forgotten skills, which may take a few weeks to build up again once term starts. Nerves and anxiety can also reappear after a long break.

A crash course helps to keep everything fresh. Your child can maintain (and even improve) on the skills they learned during the previous term, making for a smoother, more confident return to regular lessons in September.

In fact, some children even accelerate their progress during a crash course. Repeating key techniques over consecutive days strengthens learning and helps them move through skills faster giving them a real head start for the new term.

More Confidence for Summer Adventures

From beach holidays to local lidos, summer is full of opportunities for swimming fun. A crash course can help your child feel more confident when swimming in different pools or holiday environments, whether that’s using water slides, playing on floats, or simply splashing around with siblings.

It also gives parents extra peace of mind, knowing their child feels safer and more capable in the water.

Here’s a fun tip: holidays are the perfect time to reinforce those new swimming skills! Ask your child to show you what they’ve learned. Kids love to show off their what they can do. Challenge them to float, dive, or swim on their back. You can even turn it into a game. Not only will this boost their confidence, but it’ll also make swimming feel like something to enjoy and celebrate.

If your crash course is scheduled after your family holiday, even better! Your child will likely return full of enthusiasm and ready to build on the confidence they gained while away.

Ready to Boost Their Water Confidence?

If your child would benefit from a confidence boost this summer, a crash course could be just what they need.

Whether it's to maintain progress between terms, overcome nerves, or prepare for holiday fun, our friendly instructors will support your child every step of the way.

We run crash courses for all ages, including babies, toddlers, school-aged kids and even adults.

Contact us today to find out more or to book your place!

<”h5″ class="entry-title">National Swimming Pool Day</”h5″>

National Swimming Pool Day is celebrated on July 11th every year. Fish ponds as we have come to know them also originate from the Romans, when Roman emperors had private pools filled with fish, which they aptly named “piscina” the Latin word meaning “fish pond”. Gaius Maecenas, a wealthy Roman lord and patron of the arts, is credited with constructing the first heated swimming pool around 100 B.C.

Eventually, swimming pools gained popularity in Britain. By 1837, the earliest indoor pools with diving boards emerged, which is where aquatic acrobatics started to take off. With continued river related deaths occurring, various swimming pools were built, including The Maidstone Swimming Club, established in 1844 in Maidstone, Kent, which stands proudly as one of Britain’s oldest surviving swimming clubs. Its noble mission was to teach people to swim and prevent drowning incidents.

The UK Swimming Pool Crisis in 2025

Whilst it is fun to remember where we have come from in the humble swimming pool’s history, today's events are threatening its future.

The rising cost of energy crisis in the United Kingdom has over recent years has had a significant impact on the country’s infrastructure and the leisure industry has not been immune to this effect. One of the leisure industries most impacted by the energy crisis is the swimming pool industry, with many swimming pool facilities struggling to stay open due to increased energy costs.

The Local Government Association is one organisations asking the government for more support for local, public run swimming pools.

It is feared that without continued support for these services, many swimming pool facilities will close across the UK.

This could then have a wider negative physical, mental and emotional impact on millions of people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Swimming is a vital life skill - and it's under threat

It is well documented that swimming is one of the most important exercises for overall physical health and mental well being, but most importantly it is a vital life skill, one that every child should learn and have access to learn. Just this week there was another unfortunate drowning of a child in an English swimming pool. 1 of 5 childhood deaths is still caused by drowning, a very sad and completely preventable statistic.

The Chief Medical Officer in the UK says children should do around 60 minutes of exercise a day. Swimming makes up a vital component of this requirement, especially seeing as schools are required to provide swimming lessons in either Key Stage 1 of Key Stage 2 as part of the National Curriculum.

The aim is that all children should be able to swim 25m confidently by the time they leave primary school.

But with more and more swimming pools closing, it's becoming harder to access swimming lessons to learn this vital life skill.

In the June 2025, Swim England reported that 500 swimming pools have been lost since 2010. Of all the pools lost in that time, almost half (42%) have been lost since 2020. (Source: Swim England)

In addition, Sport England’s latest Active Lives Children and Young People survey for the 2023-24 academic year reports 30% of children in Year 7 are unable to swim 25m competently, confidently and proficiently, a statistic that has risen from 27% in 2017-18.

But there is hope! Free Swimming for Kids!

It is not all doom and gloom though. There are many entities that are fighting to make swimming accessible to our children. Across the UK, local councils and community groups are stepping up.

If you are a Lambeth local, here's a great deal for you: all Lambeth children under 11 years of age can swim for free during general swim sessions at Active Lambeth leisure centres.

Elsewhere, many councils run free or low-cost swimming sessions during school holidays – it’s worth checking your local authority website for details.

How You can Celebrate National Swimming Pool Day in 2025

Here are some easy ways to get involved:

Take your family swimming – make a day of it!

Share your favourite pool memory on social media using #NationalSwimmingPoolDay

Write to your MP about saving local pools

Support swim schools or community-led initiatives

Volunteer at swimming events or clubs that help kids learn to swim

Our Committment to the Community

At Cindy’s, we believe swimming should be safe, accessible, and fun for everyone. That’s why we support community initiatives and promote swimming education wherever possible.

If you’re passionate about swimming or worried about closures in your area, let’s work together to keep pools open and learning afloat.
Get Involved

Have a story to share about how swimming changed your life? Whether you have a nervous toddler, a 3 year old who's just getting used to the water, or a 7 year old struggling to progress through to strokes, crash courses can make all the difference.

Crash course swimming lessons just have so many positives, not only will it give the kids something fun to do every day, but it will also work deeply on a psychological level, allowing the swimmer to quickly build a foundation and strengthen it before things such as anxiety and overthinking creep in and complicate matters.

Let's take a look at exactly what is meant by a swimming crash course and explore 5 surprising reasons why holiday swimming crash courses are brilliant for kids.
Table of contents:

What is a Swimming Crash Course?

Why Choose a Swimming Crash Course?

Advance from Water Safety to Lifeguarding!

Intensive Swimming Lessons = Accelerated Learning

Personalised Attention in Every Class

Building Fitness and Fun with New Friends

Better Sleep and Improved Mental Health

Frequently Asked Questions

Crash Courses for the Whole Family

WHAT IS A SWIMMING CRASH COURSE?

A swimming crash course is a short, intensive block of daily swimming lessons, typically run over 4 or 5 consecutive days. These sessions are designed to fast-track your child’s progress by building consistency and confidence in the water. At Cindy's we run swimming crash courses for kids during school holidays including the Christmas and Easter breaks, 6 week summer holidays and half terms. We find they can help with everything from overcoming fear of the water to learning new strokes.

Why Choose a Swimming Crash Course?

Here are five ways your child will benefit from intensive lessons during the school holidays.

1. Advance from water safety to lifeguarding!

Did you know that holiday swimming crash courses provide an excellent opportunity for kids to become much safer swimmers? Daily swimming lessons boost their confidence and enhance their safety in the water by focusing on building essential skills, such as water confidence, proper breathing with face in the water, floating, and basic strokes. Water safety underpins everything we teach, so swimmers will also be taught the relevant water safety skills for their age and ability. By the end of the course, children will feel more comfortable and secure in the water, making them safer swimmers.

And, if you have an older, or stronger swimmer, you can book a squad focused intensive swimming course, which runs for an hour. In these sessions they focus on proper technique for all strokes, starts, turns and finishes (can anyone say diving pro?!), and the last 15 minutes of every session focus on Rookie Lifeguarding and lifesaving skills. These sessions are also particularly good if you have varying ability children, as we run lessons from Stage 1-10 in our bigger pools, as well as adult lessons - which makes it a one stop shop for all your holiday swimming fun!

2. Intensive Swimming lessons = accelerated learning

One astonishing benefit of a holiday crash course is the way it can accelerate the learning process. Unlike traditional swimming lessons that span over several months, these intensive courses condense the curriculum into a shorter timeframe. This concentrated approach allows children to progress rapidly, mastering new techniques and strokes in a shorter period, helping them progress much further in no time at all. This can be particularly helpful in those circumstances where a swimmer is struggling to progress through a new stroke or make the leap from no face in the water to proper submerged breathing.

3. Personalised attention in every class

Contrary to popular belief, our summer swimming courses are designed to cater to each child’s individual needs, whilst still learning within a group setting. We keep our group sizes small, to ensure that each child gets the attention and help they need. Our passionate and experienced swimming teachers assess the abilities of each swimmer on the first day, to ensure everyone is in the correct class and then tailor the lessons according to their group’s needs. Whether your child is a beginner or an intermediate swimmer, they will receive personalised attention and guidance to ensure optimal progress.

4. Building Fitness and fun with new friends

Intensive swimming crash courses are not just about rigorous training. These courses are designed to provide a fun-filled learning experience for kids whilst building their fitness.

Our swimming teachers and coaches incorporate games, challenges, and interactive activities to keep swimmers engaged and motivated throughout the lessons. By combining learning with enjoyment, in the short-term children will get fitter and have fun with new-found friends. And in the long term, children are more likely to develop a lifelong love for swimming!

The summer swimming lessons are particularly popular because they give children a healthy and fun activity to do, whilst also keeping everything they have learned fresh in their minds and keeping them swimming fit, so that they don’t have such a massive adjustment back to swimming lessons when the term starts.

5. Better sleep and improved mental health

Dear parents, who have a loooong 6-8 weeks with children to fill over the summer, did you know that swimming is proven to be one of the best forms of exercise to help a child’s physical and mental wellbeing? We often hear parents report that their children don’t sleep as well as normal over the school holidays, because they are not as tired from school or other weekly activities. The boost in blood flow from swimming can help improve sleep, and more surprisingly, it also improve memory, mood, clarity, and focus, which all helps with daily stress and behaviour. Parents, you're welcome 😊.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are swimming crash courses worth it?

Absolutely. Swimming crash courses for kids offer incredible value – not just in terms of time and cost, but also in terms of progress and confidence gained. Because lessons happen every day, children can quickly build on what they’ve learned, leading to faster results compared to weekly lessons. They're especially effective for beginners, nervous swimmers, or children who need help moving up a stage.

How much are swimming crash courses?

Prices for swimming crash courses vary depending on location, pool, and length of each session. At Cindy’s Swim School, our pricing is competitive and reflects the high quality of our experienced instructors, small group sizes, and personalised teaching approach. Therefore before wading into the waves, it’s crucial to consider safety precautions for you and your children. These rules should keep you all safe whichever beach you are at in the world.

Check the weather forecast:

Sudden weather changes can create dangerous swimming conditions so always check the local weather forecast and tide reports before heading to the beach. Avoid swimming during storms, in high winds, in poor visibility or when there are strong currents.

Swim in lifeguarded beaches and notice landmarks:

If possible, choose beaches with lifeguards and swim within their designated areas. Keep your children near you and give them clear instructions on where to go if you get separated. Alert them to any flags or landmarks that they must stay close to. It is easy to drift when swimming in the sea, so this is really important to keep your bearings.

Know your beach flags!

Explain the meaning of different coloured flags on the beach to your kids and show them where it is or is not safe to swim. Beach flags may differ overseas, but these are the one familiar to the UK. Try testing your kids on these to see if they can memorise them!

With credit to: https://www.newquay.co.uk/know-beach-flags/

Don’t swim alone:

It's one thing letting your kids paddle and play on the shore under your supervision, but it’s another to go further out for a swim. Set the boundaries with your children, so they know how far is too far! This will depend on the strength of the waves, the depth of the water etc.

If you are going for a swim, it is always safer to swim with a friend or family member. They can provide assistance if you encounter any difficulties. Similarly, never participate in a sea sport without a buddy – accidents can happen pretty fast, having someone there to help can be the difference between life or death.

Be aware of rip currents:

Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that can quickly pull swimmers away from the shore. If you have done your beach homework – see the section below – you will hopefully be aware of any rip currents and avoid swimming there, and certainly not with kids. If you do experience a rip current it can be very scary, but the key is not to panic. Instead, swim parallel to the shore until you're out of its pull.

Watch out for natural hazards – rocks, sandbanks, waves and jellyfish!

These are the things that can make all the difference between a happy swimming experience and an injury. It’s a good idea to bring aqua shoes, jelly shoes, crocs etc. to protect feet, especially on shingle beaches. Take care to notice the natural characteristics of the beach: are there any rocky areas? Is there a sudden sandbank drop in the water? Does the beach have areas of sinking sand? How strong are the waves? And do you need to worry about jelly fish stings? Find out before you and your children start swimming in the sea.

Respect your limits:

Be honest about your swimming abilities as well as those of your children. They rely on you to get them out of any trouble, so if you are not a confident swimmer don't venture too far from the shore.

How to find safe beaches to swim near you:

To find safe swimming beaches will depend on where you are in the world. In the UK, there are a multitude of resources online. We recommend looking at The Beach Guide as a starting place, where you can search by location.

Given the news recently about sewage overflows into UK water, it is also worth looking at the UK Government website to check the quality of the bathing water in England. Here are similar links for Wales bathing water quality, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

If you are on holiday overseas, then here are some tips to find safe swimming beaches.

Local beach guides:

Research local beach guides or visit official tourism websites for information on safe swimming beaches in your area. These resources often provide up-to-date information on water quality, lifeguard presence, and potential hazards.

Ask your holiday rep or the locals:

Seek advice from your holiday rep or hotel staff who are familiar with the area. They can recommend safe beaches based on their knowledge and experience, like advising you about any rocks lurking beneath the waves or sneaky sandbank shore breaks.

Online resources:

There are a multitude of online platforms that provide beach safety ratings and user reviews. These platforms often offer insights into water quality, lifeguard availability, overall safety, and not to mention, where you can catch the best waves 🙂.

When is it safe to swim in the sea?

There will be certain conditions that make swimming in the sea less safe. Most of these are common sense: there is no way a sensible parent will take their children to the beach for a swim in the fog, for instance. Nevertheless, these are some other factors to remember:

Avoid high tides:

Be aware of the tide times and avoid swimming during high tide, as it can create stronger currents and potentially hazardous conditions.

Be aware of the water temperature:

Cold water can cause hypothermia, so ensure the water temperature is suitable for swimming. In cold water be careful to use specialist clothing: wetsuits (drysuits), hoodies, gloves, booties etc.

Check the visibility:

Poor visibility due to fog, heavy rain, or darkness make sea swimming dangerous. Always swim during daytime when the weather is settled.

Finally, there is no better way to prepare yourself for some fun sea swimming than by being swimming fit. The vast benefits of swimming as a form of exercise are already well documented, and what better way to enjoy the ocean than when you are fit and ready for action! So, dive in, have fun, and make the most of your summer holiday!

FAQ: Sea Swimming Safety at the Beach

What’s the best age to start sea swimming?

With adult supervision, children as young as 4–5 can enjoy sea paddling and short swims. Always start in calm, shallow waters.

Can my child swim alone if they’re confident?

No. Even confident swimmers should never swim alone in open water due to unpredictable conditions.

How can I teach my child about rip currents?

Use beach models, videos (like this one) or practice in swimming lessons. Explain what they are and role-play how to swim out of one.

Is it better to swim in high tide or low tide?

The safest time to swim is usually during a mid to low incoming tide. This offers gradually deepening water and calmer conditions. Low tide can expose rocks and create strong rip currents, while high tide often brings deeper water and stronger shore-breaking waves. It’s designed to raise awareness of water safety and help prevent accidental drownings across the UK.

The campaign provides essential water safety information, encourages parents to talk to their children about the risks, and offers practical advice that can make all the difference in an emergency. It’s also a vital opportunity for swim schools, communities and schools to come together in promoting life-saving education.

When is National Drowning Prevention Week 2025?

This year, National Drowning Prevention Week runs from 14th to 21st June 2025. It comes just before the summer holidays, when children are more likely to spend time in and around open water – from beaches and lakes to rivers and swimming pools.

Why National Drowning Prevention Week is So Important to Us at Cindy’s Swim School

At Cindy’s Swim School, we are deeply passionate about equipping every child with the essential skill of swimming. We believe learning to swim is not just a fun activity or a milestone to tick off – it’s a lifelong skill that can save lives.

Drowning is a real risk – especially in summer

According to RLSS UK:

277 people accidentally drowned in the UK in 2023

Over 40% of accidental drownings happen in the summer months, particularly in July and August

Children and young people aged 8–18 are especially vulnerable when unsupervised near open water

Many drownings occur in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and canals, not just the sea

In the past few months, London has already witnessed several heartbreaking incidents where children have tragically lost their lives after getting into difficulty in the River Thames and swimming in lakes. These stories hit painfully close to home – and they are stark reminders of why water safety education is so important.

Drowning is silent, fast, and all too often preventable. We want to ensure that no child leaves our swim school without the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe in and around water. We also want to try and educate children in the local area who have never attended our swimming lessons.

How Cindy’s Swim School is Supporting National Drowning Prevention Week

This year, we’re proud to launch a series of new initiatives to support the goals of National Drowning Prevention Week and keep children in our community safe:

RLSS Rookie Lifeguard Content Is Now Part of Our Stage 4+ Lessons

We’re thrilled to be offering content from the RLSS UK’s Rookie Lifeguard Programme for children at Stage 4 and above.
