Elephant & Castle Parent and Baby Swimming classes<\/h2>\n

Our indoor pool is at Darwin Court leisure centre local to Walworth, Elephant & Castle and Southwark. It is also not too far from Bermondsey. It’s a lovely 15x5m heated swimming pool that’s always warm and beautifully looked after – perfect for your little one!<\/p>\n

A parent or guardian must accompany the baby in the pool for each lesson, making it a special bonding time too.<\/p>\n

Our classes for babies start as young as 6 weeks and you can progress to toddler and preschool classes.<\/p>\n

Baby classes are nice and small, so your and your baby can build confidence at your own pace, while having lots of fun along the way.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\udf0a Discover our Elephant & Castle Pool<\/h2>\n

Located in the Darwin Court Healthy Living Centre, it’s an indoor heated pool which measures 15m by 5m. All the pools we use for our baby classes are heated to the recommended temperatures for little ones \u2014 at least 30\u00b0C for babies over six months, and 32\u00b0C for babies up to three months.<\/p>\n

A cafe in the centre is great for refreshments before or after your lesson.<\/p>\n

Toilets, showers and changing facilities are available.<\/p>\n

We have a dedicated swimming teacher at our Elephant & Castle swimming pool. All our teachers are either Swim England or Swimming Teachers Association Level 2 qualified or above (or hold equivalent certification).<\/p>\n

They all hold relevant first aid certification and all have up to date DBS certificates \u2013 to ensure the safety of your children.<\/p>\n

What we teach<\/h2>\n

Our goal is to teach your baby to gradually become more independent in the water, in a fun and stimulating environment, making sure that being in the water is a pleasant experience from their first swim!<\/p>\n

At Cindy’s water safety is our first priority. For young babies and toddlers, this means that we play games and practice skills that involve reaching, grabbing, floating and splashing, and getting used to the sensation of holding breath and being submerged.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Swimming and playing in the water helps babies develop their gross and minor motor skills, and importantly helps build muscle strength to aid with head position, sitting, crawling and much, much more!<\/p>\n

We often sing songs and rhymes to keep the classes fun and moving, and we find that the repetition of games and instructions really helps your child with their listening and speech development.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Finally, baby swimming is not just for the babies! It’s a wonderful activity for parents, grandparents and carers too, interacting, playing and having fun in close contact with their babies! (And let’s be honest, many parents are very grateful for the long nap that often follows a swimming lesson \ud83d\ude0a)<\/p>\n

Our course content has been developed to meet the needs of babies as they grow and develop physically and cognitively. We divide our lessons into four stages:<\/p>\n

If your little one was born prematurely, it\u2019s best to check in with your GP first, just to make sure they\u2019re ready for the pool.<\/p>\n

According to NHS guidance, it\u2019s completely safe for babies to go swimming from birth, as long as they\u2019re healthy. There\u2019s no medical reason to delay swimming until after vaccinations. So, if you and your little one are ready, we\u2019d love to welcome you to the pool.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re ever unsure or have specific health concerns, it\u2019s always a good idea to check in with your GP for peace of mind.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s okay \u2014 and totally normal. Some babies cry a little (or even a lot!) when they\u2019re experiencing something new, and that\u2019s perfectly natural. The pool can be full of unfamiliar sights, sounds, and sensations, so it might take a little time for them to feel completely at ease.<\/p>\n

We always take things gently and go at your baby\u2019s pace, with plenty of cuddles, songs, and encouragement along the way. With a bit of patience and consistency, most little ones settle in beautifully \u2014 and before you know it, they\u2019ll be splashing and smiling with confidence.<\/p>\n

Our classes are held in shallow, warm water, and you\u2019ll always be within standing depth. You won\u2019t be expected to swim or go underwater yourself. Our friendly instructors are there to guide and support you every step of the way, so you can focus on bonding with your baby and enjoying the experience together.<\/p>\n

Absolutley!<\/p>\n

Babies are more sensitive to the cold than we are, so it\u2019s really important that the water is warm.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why all the pools we use for our baby classes are heated to the recommended temperatures for little ones \u2014 at least 30\u00b0C for babies over six months, and 32\u00b0C for babies up to three months.<\/p>\n

If your baby has a mild cold but is otherwise happy, eating well, and full of smiles, you\u2019re very welcome to come along to class. A splash in the warm water can even help lift their mood!<\/p>\n

However, if your little one has a fever or a more serious illness \u2014 like a chest infection, ear infection, conjunctivitis, sickness, or diarrhoea \u2014 it\u2019s best to let them rest and recover at home.<\/p>\n

Following NHS guidance, we kindly ask that babies and children wait at least two weeks after a tummy bug (diarrhoea and vomiting) has completely cleared before coming back to swim. This helps us keep the pool safe and clean for everyone.<\/p>\n

Yes, we do!<\/p>\n

We know that little ones can get poorly from time to time, so if your baby isn\u2019t feeling well and you can\u2019t make your usual class, you\u2019re welcome to request a catch-up session.<\/p>\n

All you need to do is email us at least an hour before your class starts \u2014 no need for a doctor\u2019s note or explanation. Each baby can have up to two catch-up sessions per term, subject to availability.<\/p>\n

While we can\u2019t carry missed classes over into future terms, we\u2019ll always do our best to help you stay on track and enjoy your time in the pool.<\/p>\n
